چکیده

This experiment compared the effects of unilateral lesions of the cerebellar nuclei and control lesions of the cerebellar cortex on alpha responses, alpha conditioning, and classical conditioning in the rabbit eyelid conditioning paradigm. Lesions of the dentate-interpositus (DI) region of the cerebellar nuclei abolished retention of conditioned responses to an auditory conditioned stimulus (CS), and prevented acquisition of conditioned alpha responses to a dim proximal light CS, but did not diminish alpha responses to a bright proximal light. These results indicate that the DI region is essential to both alpha conditioning and classical conditioning of eyelid responses, hut not to alpha responses, and suggest that both forms of conditioning are mediated by a common anatomical substrate that is distinct from the anatomical substrate of alpha responses.

Extinction of conditioned eyelid responses requires the anterior lobe of cerebellar cortex.

We test the hypothesis that the cerebellar cortex is required for the extinction of conditioned eyelid responses in rabbits trained using standard Pavlovian delay procedures. Following 10 daily training sessions during which rabbits achieved asymptotic performance, lesions of the ipsilateral hemisphere of the cerebellar cortex were made by aspiration. The target of these lesions was the anterio...

Cerebellar cortex lesions prevent acquisition of conditioned eyelid responses.

We have used aspiration and electrolytic lesions to investigate the contributions of cerebellar cortex to the acquisition and expression of conditioned eyelid responses. We show that lesions of the anterior lobe of rabbit cerebellar cortex disrupt the timing of previously learned conditioned eyelid responses. These short-latency responses were used as an indication that the cerebellar cortex wa...

Memory Consolidation in the Cerebellar Cortex

Several forms of learning, including classical conditioning of the eyeblink, depend upon the cerebellum. In examining mechanisms of eyeblink conditioning in rabbits, reversible inactivations of the control circuitry have begun to dissociate aspects of cerebellar cortical and nuclear function in memory consolidation. It was previously shown that post-training cerebellar cortical, but not nuclear...

Impaired classical eyeblink conditioning in cerebellar-lesioned and Purkinje cell degeneration (pcd) mutant mice.

Converging lines of evidence from rabbits, rats, and humans argue for the crucial involvement of the cerebellum in classical conditioning of the eyeblink/nictitating membrane response in mammals. For example, selective lesions (permanent or reversible) of the cerebellum block both acquisition and retention of eyeblink conditioning. Correspondingly, electrophysiological and brain-imaging studies...

Cerebellar cortex contributions to the expression and timing of conditioned eyelid responses.

We used micro-infusions during eyelid conditioning in rabbits to investigate the relative contributions of cerebellar cortex and the underlying deep nuclei (DCN) to the expression of cerebellar learning. These tests were conducted using two forms of cerebellum-dependent eyelid conditioning for which the relative roles of cerebellar cortex and DCN are controversial: delay conditioning, which is ...
